Paycheck to paycheck budget spreadsheet: plan by payday, not by month
When money is tight, a monthly budget can look fine on paper while you still run short the week before payday. The fix is to budget each paycheck separately.

Why monthly budgets fail when you live paycheck to paycheck
Rent might be due on the 1st and your car payment on the 5th, but if you are paid on the 15th and the 30th, the first paycheck has to cover both. A monthly total hides that. A paycheck budget shows it.
How to set up a paycheck budget
- List every paycheck date for the next two months, for every earner.
- List every bill with its due date and amount.
- Assign each bill to the last paycheck that arrives before it is due.
- Subtract. What is left on each paycheck is what you can spend on food, fuel and everything else until the next one.
- If one paycheck goes negative, move a bill’s due date (many companies allow this) or move spending from another paycheck.
Build a buffer, slowly
The way out of paycheck to paycheck is a small buffer, even one week of spending. Put a fixed, small amount into a savings line on each paycheck. On biweekly pay, the two months a year with a third paycheck are the easiest place to start.
Then tackle debt
Once the buffer exists, extra money goes to debt. The snowball method (smallest balance first) keeps you motivated; the avalanche method (highest interest first) saves the most money. See our debt snowball spreadsheet guide.
A ready-made planner
The Paycheck Budget & Debt Payoff Planner does all of this for weekly, biweekly, twice-a-month or monthly pay and up to two incomes. Each bill lands on the right paycheck, and you see what is left before payday. No bank login needed.
